LED bulb retrofit

It seemed like an easy enough idea: switch out the incandescent bulbs supplied in the Teardrop trailer’s stock interior ceiling lamps with LED bulbs which use about a quarter of the wattage. And it is a good idea, especially for lamps like the galley which may get several hours of use. BUT… when you shop for the 12VDC LED replacement bulbs check whether they are polarized or can adapt adapt to either polarity.

The ones I ordered online turned out to be the reverse polarity of the trailer electrical system, which I figured out soon enough when not one of the 4 bulbs worked. Rather than attempt to return them, I decided it was easier to remove the lamp and switch the wiring conductors… which had a bit of mission creep because there was hardly any loose wiring to play with so I ended up snipping them and using crimp connectors to rejoin them, switched.

Definitely worth it in the end though. I have better quality bright, white light. And I don’t fret about how much I use them, knowing they are just sipping a tiny smidgen of power.

So, that’s how I do things with my Teardrop Trailer but by no means the full story or the best way. What about you? Add your own methods, ideas and experiences using the comment box below for the benefit of all readers.
