Did you read the Simplest Teardrop Upgrade Ever blog post? Well, this is about perhaps the second-simplest, though minor cost involved in this one. During my inaugural trip of the season in early May, I was sitting there staring at the galley and realized there is “blank space” above the cooler. Now, with the small Teardrop trailer kitchen, space is not something to waste so I set about thinking how I could add a shelf or drawer below the counter, above the cooler.
I came up with a few DIY ideas but I felt like it to add wood construction and/or drawer sliders would consume too much of the small available space, and be over-building considering the weight of small items such a space might hold.

In the end, after spending an evening browsing the online-purveyor-of-all-things for “under desk drawers” and “under shelf drawers” I found some plastic ones that were perfect size to max out the available space.
I know what you’re thinking, mounting a plastic container of any type… much less a drawers… in a little Teardrop camper suspended on leaf springs may not seem the most sensible idea. But I figured they’re not going to hold anything large or heavy, and I would screw then in to the counter underside in addition to the supplied double-sided adhesive strip. I stretch a bungee across the fronts of the drawers to prevent them from opening in transit.

I’ve waited until two trips completed… which included gravel roads and crappy paved ones… to report in but can now say the project seems to be a success. I am loving having the extra small things drawers, and I have reasonable expectation they will be durable. A good friend, who has an immaculate kitchen, once remarked to me, “every kitchen has a crap drawer”. Now so does my Teardrop 🙂
So, that’s how I do things with my Teardrop Trailer but by no means the full story or the best way. What about you? Add your own methods, ideas and experiences using the comment box below for the benefit of all readers.
